Let's go!
To create a square shibori pattern, first fold the fabric napkin lengthwise at regular intervals like an accordion, then fold the narrow strip of fabric again so that you end up with a square packet. Cut four pieces of cardboard that are slightly smaller than the fabric packet and place them on top and bottom of the packet. Secure firmly with four rubber bands.
To create a triangular shibori pattern, first fold the napkin lengthwise at regular intervals like an accordion as in step 1, then fold one bottom corner upwards to the opposite edge to create a triangle. Turn the fabric over and keep folding upwards in the triangle so that you end up with a triangular parcel. As in step 1, cut 2 pieces of cardboard into triangles for the bottom and 2 pieces for the top and secure the packet firmly with rubber bands.
Fill four bowls with 3 liters of 60°C warm water each (= 2 liters of boiling water + 1 liter of cold water), dissolve one of the textile dyes expertly in each bowl and place the fabric in it. Leave the packets in the dye bath for approx. 5 minutes, then remove and place on a draining rack, where the dye should then soak in for approx. 1 hour.
Mix the simplicol color fixer with 8 liters of cold water and soak the still bound cloth napkins in it for 15 minutes, moving them repeatedly. Then remove the fabric and rinse with clear water. Wring out and now the strings/rubbers can be loosened.
Dry the fabric well and then iron the napkins so that they are easier to fold.
Fold the napkins once in the middle. The opening should be at the bottom.
Fold the top edge onto the bottom edge.
Find the center by folding across the middle, then unfold again and fold the top right and left corners inwards one after the other so that the previously top long edge meets in the middle.
Fold the bottom corners right and left inwards to the center.
Fold the right and left corners approximately to the upper third line so that the previously lower side edges meet in the middle.
Hold the cloth napkin firmly and turn it over. Fold the bottom corner upwards, then take the right and left bottom corners to the back and tuck them into each other or fix them with a clip if the napkin is too thick.
Fold out the “head” and “ears” of the napkin bunny and then the Easter cloth napkins are ready!
