FESTIVE DIY: CHRISTMAS CUSHIONS
Christmas is just around the corner and who doesn’t want to make themselves comfortable at home and decorate for Christmas? For contemplative evenings on the couch with a cup of tea or punch, these Christmas cushions with a dip-dye effect and motifs glued on with string are just the thing! In this article, we’ll show you how quick and easy it is.

Let's go!
Fill two bowls with 3 liters of 60°C water each (= 2 liters of boiling water + 1 liter of cold water) and dissolve one of the textile dyes in each bowl.
For the dip-dye effect, place the cushions about halfway into the dye bath. For a smoother ombré transition (shown here in poppy seed red), the cushion can also be moistened beforehand. After about 10 minutes soaking time, pull the cushion partially out of the dye bath so that only the lower third is still in the water. Leave the dye to work for another 50 minutes. The color becomes more intense here and “migrates” upwards – depending on the structure of the textile to be dyed, the color can penetrate faster or slower, resulting in very different effects.
Mix half of the color fixer in two tubs with 4 liters of cold water each and place the cushion covers in it for 15 minutes, moving them repeatedly. Then remove the fabric and rinse with clear water.
Allow the fabric to dry well and now the cushion covers can be designed further. Use a marking aid such as tailor’s chalk to draw motifs on the cushions. In this case, a mistletoe is placed on the red cushion and a wooden hut with smoke from the chimney on the green one – inspired by the dark green, treetop-like dip-dye effect.
Now trace the pre-drawn lines with textile glue. The white cotton cord is then gradually glued to the cushion along the lines. The textile glue becomes transparent after hardening so that it leaves no marks on the cushion. The Christmas cushions are now finished!
